He didn't. He was very careful not to.
The pharisees, the conservative fundamentalists of Jesus's time, already want to kill him because He spoke truths that they didn't like.
To call Himself God, would've been to hand them a reason to kill him: blasphemy. Jesus was going to do nothing to force their hand in killing Him.
When they killed Him, they did it on trumped-up charges, just like what happens today, and He in no way forced their hand.

Well, it may be a typo, but Jesus is 'a part ' of God, not 'apart' .
Apart can mean an exception, or excluded from.
There are other examples of the definition which may be accurately used, but I wanted to make that distinction.
"When did Jesus say he was God?"
Most people miss this part about Jesus. Mostly I think because the reaction of those hearing it was not recorded as being excited or extremely angered. In other places, it is the reaction of those listening which testifies of what Jesus was saying.
Here is the example which I find is poignant to what you are asking:
27 Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." ( Mark 2)
Who is the Lord of the Sabbath?
Deuteronomy 5:14
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.
And then to get it a little more complex, but still derived from scripture, God makes a distinction with Himself:
6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.
(Psalm 45, compare to Hebrews 1:8 -10)
And Jesus said this:
But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins."
(John 8:23 - 24)
He was setting upon himself the position of Mediator, the sacrifice was therefore valid because He is the Lord of the Sabbath, He is the Mediator, the Kinsman Redeemer, the God who is My Salvation. None other than the Most High God who was prophesied:
Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.'
(Daniel 7:27)
So us saints are waiting for the return of the Most High. And He is God, like we told you.

We don't believe Jesus is the messiah because he didn't do any of the following:
Is there universal knowledge of one G-d? (Jeremiah 31:33, Zechariah 8:23, 14:9, 14:16,
Isaiah 11:9, Isaiah 40:5, Zephaniah 3:9)
Were all Jews returned to Israel? (Isaiah 43:5-6, Isaiah 11:12, Isaiah 27:12-13)
Did he bring world peace? (Isaiah 11:6, Micah 4:3)
Were all weapons destroyed? (Ezekiel 39:9)
Did all warfare cease? (Isaiah 2:4)
Was the Temple rebuilt in it's place? (Ezekiel 37:24-28 Ezekiel 40-48, Isaiah 33:20, Micah
4:1)
Did he bring physical restoration to all who are sick or disabled in any way? (Isaiah
35:5-6)
Was he preceded by Elijah? (Malachi 3:23-24-- 4:4-5 in KJV)
Did the nations help the Jews materially? (Isaiah 60:5, 60:10-12, 61:6)
Does eternal joy and gladness characterize the Jewish nation? (Isaiah 51:11)
Are Jews sought for spiritual guidance? (Zechariah 8:23)
Is the Egyptian river dry yet? (Isaiah 11:15)
Do trees in Israel yield new fruit every month? (Ezekiel 47:12)
Did each tribe receive it's inheritance? (Ezekiel 47:13-14)
Is the enemy buried? (Ezekiel 39:12)
Did he accomplish these tasks without tiring or failing? (Isaiah 42:4)
Did death cease? (Isaiah 25:8)
Are the dead resurrected? (Isaiah 26:19, Daniel 12:2, Ezekiel 37:12-13)

Though I am not a Christian, my Vaishnava 'grand' spiritual master, told us things about Jesus.
He calls him a shaktiavesh avatar. This means Jesus is an empowered living entity. Sort of like a hand of God or a secretary in God's government. He has the power of God in him, to spread theism, and love of God. He does God's work.
My spiritual master also says that Jesus is a pure devotee of God. The associates of God, are very Godly and are empowered with His shaktis.
However, there are many Shakti avesh avataras.
Hazrat Muhammad was also a shakti avesh avatar.
"Hazrat Muhammad, the inaugurator of the Islam religion, I accept him as an empowered servant of God because he preached God-consciousness in those parts of the world and induced them to accept the authority of God. He is accepted as the servant of God and we have all respect for him."
2, " Because these two religious leaders of the world, they preached about the glorification of the Supreme Lord. And they sacrificed everything for preaching the glories of the Lord."
"These are the symptoms by which we can understand that Jesus Christ and Hazrat Muhammad was, were Saktyaves avataras. "

I went through the Bible and marked down each time it says that God is God, Jesus is Jesus. There are over 500 places. Like John 1:18 "No one has even seen God," , John 1:2 "He was with God in the beginning.", Matt. 11:27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father...".
There are a few places where metaphors are, that some people don't know better, then claim they mean Jesus is God; but they are wrong. They often like to clam that if Jesus is God, then they can make an image of God. So they are keeping themselves in sin.

Jesus used God's name "I AM," (Cf. Exodus 3:14) and applied it to Himself several times.
The problem is that English Bibles do not do a good job (except in one case, which is John 8:58.) Several other passages (in the Greek) are clear. These include: Matthew 14:27, Mark 6:50, Mark 13:6, Luke 21:8, John 4:26, John 6:20, John 8:24, 28, and John 13:19. Many of the English Bibles translate "I AM" to "It is I," or "I am He."

I would think that if you believe what the Bible has to say, as I do, you can come to no other conclusion. Here is some of what it has to say on the subject....
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, THE MIGHTY GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
John 13:10 "I and My Father are one".
John 1... In the beginning was the Word, And the Word was with God, and the Word was God....14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God...
John 20:26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and see my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and put it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. Thomas answered and said unto him, MY LORD AND MY GOD. Jesus saith unto him, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST,
1 Timothy 3:16 God was manifest in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
Colosians 2:9 For in Him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily,
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying " All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you: and lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen

Jesus is apart of the Trinity, for one. John 10:30 - "I and the Father are one."
Matthew 27:11
"Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied."

Hey again!!
Yeah my family are Jehovahs Witnesses and Jesus isn't God, he's Gods son... people just assume Jesus is God because Jesus was on Earth and they never saw God (Jehovah).

"Before Abraham was, I am"-Jn 8:58; "You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world"- Jn. 8:23. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that has been made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men". -Jn. 1:1-4. "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth"-Jn. 1:14; "And Thomas answered and said unto Him, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said unto him, 'Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe"- Jn. 20:28,29. (Believed what? What Thomas had just declared. My Lord and my God). I could go on and on and on but I think I've made my point.
I could tell you about how Jesus Christ claimed and displayed powers which only God could have and how Jesus took upon Himself the same titles and names given to Almighty God in the OT. I could tell you about how Jesus Christ demonstrated His divinity by forgiving sins, for only God can forgive sins. I could tell you about how Jesus was tried, convicted and executed for blasphemy for claiming to be equal with God. I could tell you about the many times many Jews wanted to stone Jesus to death for blasphemy.
The Jews of Jesus' day did not misunderstand or fail to comprehend the claims of divinity made by Jesus Christ, why do you?
Finally, Jesus Christ clearly demonstrated His divinity by rising from the dead. Who else but God has power over death?
