they don't have to be hand reared you could allow the parents to bring up the young and keep handling them until they are big enough to be sold they wont be as tame but will still used to being handled also ask the local pet store what their policy is on buying birds they may only take birds from registered breeders

Do not use hay. That would be a very bad idea. They need a nest box, but I would recomend that you don't put one in until you learn about breeding and nutrition for breeding pairs. Your birds need to be on a really good diet BEFORE they start to breed or you could end up with some very unhealthy chicks. If they are on an all seed diet, you really should get them on a better diet whether they are breeding or not.

I would advise you NOT to hand feed if you have no experience at it. You could VERY easily kill a chick. Only experienced hand feeder should feed chicks. The temperature of the food has to be just right - too cold and it will not digest properly and will sit in their crop and go bad, too hot and you will burn their crops. Either of these mistakes will kill them.
If the food is too thick it will not digest, if it's too runny, the chicks will end up with malnutritaion. Both of these things will kill them.
If you accidently get food down the wrong pipe and into the lungs, the chick will die right there.

There is a lot to know about breeding even if you are going to let the parents feed the chicks.

The pet stores may not take them if you are not a licenced breeder, and/or if the birds are not vet checked.

I actually have a girl cockatiel, and the only thank you to be one hundred% confident correct to the sexes is to have a vet do a blood attempt. i understand eveyone continuously says which you will tell by ability of colour, yet it quite is merely an informed wager. My tiel had all the markintgs of a male is is very vocal, yet she is definately a girl.

i have a 2 month old parent raised tiel and he is the sweetest bird i have!!! if you do breed them (although it doesnt sound like you should, no offense) you do need the nest box; for privacy, warmth, etc... if you handfeed them, you have to do it for at least 2 months but please dont, handfeeding is a very delicate practice and you need to be shown how to do it properly before trying it your self.
