For the same reason fundamentalists say they can use the bible to justify their hate and intolerance and not having to love the brothers and sisters in Christ that they don't feel like loving: because they use the bible to support their own insupportable claims.
This has been going on since the Old Testament, well into the New Testament, with the pharisees (the fundamentalists of Jesus's time), and that grand tradition is carried on by the radical conservative fundamentalists of today.
That's why, short version.

Because the bible teaches that slavery is okay.
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)
If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever. (Exodus 21:2-6 NLT)
The bible teaches that racism is alright.
Kill all the inhabitants of any city where you find people that worship differently than you. Deuteronomy 13:12-16
Any city that doesn’t receive the followers of Jesus will be destroyed in a manner even more savage than that of Sodom and Gomorrah. Mark 6:11
You must kill those who worship another god. Exodus 22:20
And to top it all off, as long as they are Christian, their god will stand behind them in all they do.
A Christian can not be accused of any wrongdoing. Romans 8:33

Anyone can use any media or medium for any reason to distort whatever facts they want to their own twisted needs. It is up to the listener to decide what's right or wrong; unfortunately, that requires knowledge, intelligence, and plain old common sense, all of which, sadly, most people lack.
Of course, the same could be true of the phony religious pastors on the tube, who use the Bible to con people out of money. So, deceit works on both sides of the altar, so to speak! ;)

Its a cop out excuse... pretty fool proof if your a believer. The bible is THE book on how to live your life if youre a believer. Faith being the main ingredient... thats why Jesus was able to convince his followers that he is the son of God. No buts, Its his way or the highway.

For the same reason that other religions, both mainstream and otherwise, use it to promote their beliefs. The Bible is a rather ambiguous piece of writing as is evidenced by the many factions that use it.

It's just another psychological "tool" used to scare people anyway. I wonder if they are or were originally Baptists. These altered groups allegedly preach similar hell-fire sermons anyway and than wash the smoke off by bathing themselves to wash their so-called sins away. Many religiously fanatic groups are more like twisted cults anyway. I have wondered why it appears so easy for Muslim groups to recruit blacks into their religion is actually due to these racial prejudices. It seems to become more clear that many who have twisted religion into an army or militia are exploiting peoples blind faith, prejudice and hatred as well. I myself prefer at this point to remain agnostic or non-denominational.

The Bible has much to say about the proper use and gathering of slaves, how and when to rape, etc. Seems like an easy fit.

Just like how many different religions interpret the bible the way they want in order to preach what they think is real.
