Limewire itself is not illegal - it's how people use it that is illegal. You are not allowed to share copyrighted materials. Just because some people use it to trade illegal copyrighted material doesn't mean the program is illegal. That would be like saying cars are illegal because some people use them to commit crimes.

A tool cannot be legal or not unless it was obtained illegally, or it was based on illegal sources and means. And Limewire is merely a tool.
However, Limewire can (and often is) used for illegal activities such as pirating copyrighted materials.

Limewire is kind of like a radar/laser detector.. Legal to own, illegal to use. If you are using Limewire to download something that is normally free, then it's legal. If you are using it to download Metallica's latest release, it's not legal. Just ask James Hetfield about this..

No, much like a gun is not necessarily illegal. Using it to rob a bank (like using Limewire to download copyrighted content without the owner's consent) IS illegal.

LimeWire is 100% legal to have and use. But it's down to you not to download data you have no legal right to download. Music, Video, Pictures, Documents even pdf (E-books) might be under copyright.
LimeWire does not have viruses or trojans. The people sharing files might.
Downloading any .exe files (Programs) can harm your PC.

well sort of .... file sharing is apparently illegal thats why some of the other file sharing programs have been shut down. But then again limewire has been kept online and so have torrents so either it is very difficult to shut them down or its just kind of a grey area
