I've been to both cities, and I'd recommend staying in Paris and then traveling to Italy. Paris has a great metro system and it is easy to get around. You can also find good deals into Paris during the off season.

I believe that the trip from northern Italy into Paris is about a day's drive, but you can check online for info about the European rail system.

I don't know about current costs, but I have been to both. My opinion, go to Italy...specifically Florence. The food is great, the scenery incredible, and the people are friendly.

Paris has a lot of neat things to see, but the last time I was there the pollution was terrible. The food is expensive and, in my opinion, overrated. And the French people...well, are just not very nice.

So for me, it's Italy. Wish I could go in October, which is right after their vacation season and the weather is fantastic.

Have fun.

It's a little under 300 miles from downtown Paris to the Italian border; it's almost 600 miles to Rome from Paris.
