If you are serving an elegant dinner, then you might want to skip the tomatoes altogether, as some people are allergic to tomatoes, and some don't like to be "squirted" or to squirt others when they accidentally bite too hard on one, while some just don't like them in a salad, and some don't like having to bite down on a "ping-pong" ball, etc.
If you are serving to kids, they just love to bite down on squirty stuff! (please, keep your snickers to yourself!)
If you are serving the salad in a barbecue or other potentially "messy" affair, I'd cut them in half (quarters is a bit much! of course, you could always slice them, but that's a lot of work!).

You don't have to cut them at all, although doing so adds a little more juice and flavor to most dishes. I just cut mine in half.
