i started working for someone recently and about two weeks into the job my little sister got into a bike accident and i had to take her to the hospital. she called me in a panic because no one else was around so i ran to go get her. i called my work to let them know i couldn't go in but they said if i don't come in they will let me go. i explained to them that i had to take care of my sister but they insisted they would have to let me go. i didn't want to lose my job so i tried to see if ANYONE could help me out but i was all alone. i called my work again and they said they would have to let me go, i told them they were being childish and that my family is more important that any job. does anyone have advice for how i should handle this situation?

they never gave me a policy on missing work so it was kind of sudden and it was a small business so i talked to the manager/owner on the phone and they were the one to let me go

Well if that was the only instance and you were never late or called out prior then they should have some heart. Try to talk to them and show them the hospital papers and ensure them that you had no other choice in the matter and you certainly did not call out intentionally. If that does not work then I have to say move on and find another job with a company that at least has a heart.
By the way I hope your sister is okay

Move forward. If you're working for an employer that doesn't understand that sometimes family emergencies come up, you don't want to be working for them. On the other hand, from the employers point of view, they need to know they can count on the people they hire to be there and to do the job. Unless there were other times in the two weeks you were there when you didn't show up it sounds like they were being unreasonable. There are better jobs out there.

Request a meeting with the supervisor. Bring the hospital bill with you. Explain once, in simplest terms, exactly what happened. Let him/her know you did not want to lose your job over an unavoidable absence.
They may refuse the meeting and then you are done, but at least you tried. They may still leave you unemployed depending on their policy- is it a zero tolerance for absence? Or you may get your job back- probably on probation for a period of time. If you don't try you will never know!
As a mom I say bravo to you for taking care of your sister- I would want my son to do the same!

talk to your boss and show them the hospital papers, and if even that is not effective, you either look for another job or you go to proper authorities who helps aggrieved workers.
