Two nights ago we were driving home and had to stop in the middle of the road, because a little kitten was just sitting there in traffic. It made no attempt to flee from the cars, or from me when I got out and picked it up. The cat was riddled with flees, malnourished and bloated, and smelt like a dead animal in a garbage can. We went and bought some kitten flea medicine, dewormer, and soft cat food, and now the fleas are getting under control, her belly is no longer swollen, she is eating well, and has had two baths. However the stench of kitty has hardly diminished. Why does the kitty stink like a dead trash golem?

It's only been 2 nights, the kitten probably was full of worms.
Takes time before the wormer kills all (may need a repeat in few wks. too), therefore the little kitty is probably having very raunchy-smelling poopies and gas-galore,... I'm sure she's got a terrible tummy ache associated with all that's going on internally.
Plus she probably doesn't know how to groom herself, especially while feel ill.
The stench is prob. from her rotten stool and gas-passing.

BTW, you are wonderful to have rescued the defenseless baby cat,.... more people should be like you!

You are a wonderful person to have rescued this kitten. I think a trip to the vet is in order. If you bought over the counter worming medicine, it won't get rid of tape. The smell may be just from forging for food and eating all the wrong things. He may just need to get healthier and the smell will diminish. But definitely a vet check is in order. He was a stray. He needs to be checked for disease and get his vaccinations. Again, you are obviously a good person. : )

Without seeing her its hard to tell, but infection smells horrible and I think your kitty needs to see a vet. A kitten generally hasn't had enough time to allow for teeth to rot, if she was older I would suggest brushing her teeth but I don't think that's the problem. I think she may have an infection of some type and needs to be put on antibiotics to help clear it up. God bless you for saving the little kitten!

if you bought over the counter de-wormers, your kitten may still have worms. Those over the counter treatments don't work on all worms. Plus, you shouldn't use them on tiny kittens. She might have ear mites--check her ears for black gunky build up.

Please contact a vet or the humane society for a full check up. the humane society will have some low cost options for check ups, basic shots and spay/neuter if the cat is over 2 pounds.

Thank you for taking care of the kitten!

It might be stinkie because of whatever it was eating to survive all by itself, or it's breath might be stinkie due to not eating at all. It sounds like she is on the road to recovery.

She may have mange... it makes there skin very stinky.

Try putting a chopped lemon in boiling water, cook for minute or two then let it steep in the pan over night. Then sponge on to the kittens fur. Also good for fleas. refrigerate whats left.

It could be that the cat has some kind of sickness inside him or her that might be causing the stench from his insides and bringing it out

Yes maybe she was skunked. Try a tomato juice bath. If that doesn't work try a visit to a vet or local animal hospital.

the vet still cannot figure that out or no? Maybe there is an infection or maybe you need a better deordering shampoo. like the stuff for skunked pets
