as SVo man said, the heads are wider on the 4.6 than the 5.0... but having to add stuff to fit for the 4x4 would be a nightmare (oil pan and such)...
As others said, shove a 5.0 v-8 in there as most parts are already available to make the switch as it was an option from around 1996-end of 2001 MY production

Don't even try it. the cost would be exorbitant.
You would be better off installing a 5.0 motor form a late 90's Explorer. They came as a factory option.

Not really. in additon tothe motor installation
you would probably have to replace the transmission, drive shaft, the electronic
brain cars have these days, the wiring harnesses,
ect. It can be done,but its alot ofwork.

your most probs will be the motor mounts, you can buy the kit. and the ex sysm, the drive train will have to be redone. drive-shat. but you will be ok, just takes a lot of work, but later you will be proud to drive by the old root-beer drive-in and show her off//
