This is a good question, it most likely stems from the idea of keeping the nuclear family unit together. Children and parents are a big heartstring puller. Also, many boses are working around school, they are trying to get parents home when kids are out of school.
If you feel you are being unfairly treated, talk with you boss. Explain that you also would like to enjoy the holiday season, but are forced to cancel all your plans becouse you are sheduled during these events to cover the "family man" time off. If this is an issue, discuss among co-workers, and see what the staff feels in general, and prrsent your case again.
Sometimes, you won't get results, but you are now on record, and can use that in future scheduling events.

I'm up bright and early on Thanksgiving day driving to our adoption in order to clean the kitty's cages so that my friends may spend time with their families.I also decorate my apartment and get out the Christmas cd's. I'm not a heavy eater so a meal does not mean that much. During the Christmas season I try to keep a good balance between work and the festivities. No Christmas parties as I'm somewhat of a loner and have few close friends and family.

Because they the either have children, or like the people with children more than they like you. In business America preference is much more important than performance. This type of thinking is why we are no longer the undisputed leader of the corporate world.
They probably gave you the old social security spin: " We'll do it for you when you have kids.". This type of brush off doesn't help you right now, does it? By the way, I managed to have foster children and raise a high school senior without benefit of this inequitable hand holding. Good Luck.

Kids without supervision -- the perfect recipe for disaster. Ever see "Lord of the Flies"?
Many good, hard-working people have kids and the companies want to keep them. In my opinion, it is better to rearrange schedules to accommodate such an important need than to have a lot of people "call in sick."
This may rile you up - what stirs my stomach is when schedules are rearranged to accommodate a sporting event.
The world comes to an end for the super bowl.

To permit those with kids to spend more time with them during the holiday season and on certain days in particular.
You, on the other hand, are just trying to get more time off and not working in their place. Enjoy the overtime if any and quit being so selfish.

Yup. I'm not saying it's right, but they do it all the time. Get out your contract and talk with your union rep.
