I cut around the pit, usually ending up with four large pieces. I then cut through the mango, but not the peel, diagonally and then vertically. This makes the mango into cubes (still attached to the peel) and easy to eat. I hold the two sides, pop the mango peel forward so as to pop out the cubes and then I bite them off. Delicious.
It would be so much easier to explain with pictures :P

Peeling a mango is a messy business, and no, you can't eat it like an apple. There is a techique involved...stand it on its larger end. With a sharp knife slice downward as close to the stone as possible. There will be two sides...cut a crisscross pattern and carefully slice off the cubes, place in dessert dishes...or just eat it over the sink. Eating mangoes for 50 years and have never seen a worm.

I never eat mango. The taste is rather disgustingly like a peach mated with a cantaloupe.

Also, I was in Mexico, and a little native boy was offering me a mango, insisting that I try a bite-- when I did, he looked inside of mine to see if it was wormy. Only then did he take a bite of his own.

I threw mine away and never ate mango again.

You can cut both sides off and cut across and vertically on each of the sides to get a tic-tac-toe-like pattern. Then turn each side inside out and eat it. You can peel off the skin around the seed and then eat the meat around the seed.

The outside is very bitter and you probably do not want to eat it. Peel it. Don't forget about the pit too!
