all of the denominations that exist now have their roots in Catholicism, no matter how much fundies are going to whine by saying are ancestors were pre-catholicism, and all that ****. Isn't Catholicism the actual "non-denominational Church" it's not like it singled it's self from the other Churches, they did that themselves.

So can someone explain how Catholicism is just another denomination?

Just wondering.

Father K I basically mean Catholicism doesn't have to strictly mean Roman Catholicism i.e. Eastern Orthodoxy or some forms of Anglicanism.

Schneb you have to look into history bud Catholics weren't the only Christians burning bibles, they believed Tyndale's version was full of MIS-TRANSLATIONS which could contribute to HERESY.

Oh and schneb before accusing them of all those false accusations you listed maybe you should go out and by a book about Catholicism, and not adhere from the second hand.

There were certainly other beliefs/interpretations different from and competing with those held by the Roman Church from the start. Church fathers labeled them heresies and persecuted them, sometimes to death. During the time of Constantine in the 4th century and his successors, the Roman Church was given pre-eminence by the state, which then killed or drove all others away and gave up on those too far away to control with armies.

Catholicism is not non-denominational. The Catholic church wasn't originally like it is now. Protestant denominations differ greatly from the Catholic church in regards to some dogma. It is my firm belief that the Catholic church has rejected the truth of the entire Bible in exchange for lies which the people desire to hear. Therefore, it is also my firm belief that their candlestick has been removed from before the Lord.
Most of the beliefs in the Catholic Church are the same as other Christian churches. However, the Catholic church, led by the pope, has accepted and teaches errant doctrines to its people. This can be easily seen if one simply reads the Bible.
Contrary to popular Catholic beliefs -the popes remarks notwithstanding- the Catholic Church is not the one true Christian Church on earth. The Bible tells us that all who are born again and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour are Christians and will go to heaven. The Church, according to the Bible, is the Body of Christ on earth, made up of many different yet equally important members. No where does the Bible declare that the Roman Catholic Church -or any other church- is the only true church on earth. The Bible clearly states that all who have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour are part of the body of Christ -the Church.
If a so called Christian church teaches doctrines which clearly contradict and deny the teachings of the Bible, then that church is in danger of God's judgement and of having its candle stick removed from before the Lord.

Catholicism is just a cult that evolved in the European dark ages. They forged documents and made up stories claiming that the bishop of Rome was the head of all Christianity. And don't make too much fun of those fundies. the protestant reformation was based largely on the writings of Augustine. So do you consider the Greek Orthodox to be a denomination, Around 1000AD they decided that they did not like the idea of the Roman See trying to take control of all of Christendom?

The first Christians were in the churches of Ephesus, Rome, etc. - they did not consider themselves to be 'Catholic' or 'Protestant' - just Christian.

Catholicism, through time, grew from the Roman church. It spread throughout Europe, forcibly at times.

Martin Luther, most notably, but not independently, saw what he considered to be flaws in the Catholic Church and started the Protestant movement.

So we have churches such as Greek Orthodox that descended from the church in Athens independently from the Catholic Church. We have many off-shoots from Martin Luther's Protestant movement, we have the Catholic Church, and we have a plethora of other churches, each calling themselves Christian.

The test is Who do they believe Jesus to be? Do they add or subtract from the message of the Gospel of Jesus.

Therefore, Catholicism, although one of the oldest branches of Christianity, is one of many who profess Christ Jesus.

Hope that answers your question. It's the condensed version, the true history would take a lot more time and writing than this forum allows.

Calling someone a Fundie is not the way. It doesn't matter who was the "mother". After all, a strong Christian son came out of the womb of Madeline O' hare. You need to read how Jesus feels about the major denominations...

Catholicism is a sect of Christianity. However, its roots are full of error. Why else did they burn other Christians for just wanting to interpret the Latin Bible into English and German? For example, William Tyndale was tried on a charge of heresy in 1536 and condemned to the stake for translating the New Testament into the common man's English. Tyndale was burned alive on 6 October 1536.
Here is what I have found from my own studies on the matter (having been raised Catholic).

Catholics adhere to the Pope as the vicar of Christ.
Christians believe that the Bible is the final authority.
2 Timothy 3:16

Catholic tradition is of equal authority with the Bible.
Christians believe traditions of man cause error.
Matthew 15:3

Catholics adhere to Mary as a co-regent of Jesus.
Christians beleive that Mary was blessed, but only human.
Luke 11:27-28

Catholics believe that priests or Mary are mediators.
Christians believe there that only Jesus is Mediator.
1 Timothy 2:5

Transubstatiation recrucifies Christ at the communion.
Christians believe Christ died just once.
Hebrews 6:6

Catholics believe Mary was a perpetual virgin.
Christians believe the Bible that He had siblings.
Mark 6:3

Catholics call their priests "father".
Catholics call their teachers "pastor" or "minister".
Matthew 23:9

Catholics pray repetitive words with Rosary Beads.
Christians pray the same as they speak.
Matthew 6:7

Pope canonizes those to be called "saints".
Christians believe all who believe are saints.
Philippians 1:1

Pope decides who is "priest" in church leadership.
Christians believe all who believe are a priesthood.
1 Peter 2:5

Celibacy is enforced on priests and bishops.

Christians do not bow to images.

Catholicism is not even Christianity in its true sense. Most Catholics worship idols, put greater authority on the Pope's words than what the Bible says. So where is the question of denomination?

The Church in Ireland didn't have any links to Catholicism until the 12th century when England invaded under the authority of the Pope to turn Ireland Catholic.

The simple answer is its not. Everthing else is .

Martin Luther Commentary on St. John: ``We are compelled to concede to the Papists that they have the Word of God, that we received it from them, and that without them we should have no knowledge of it at all.'' Exactly where did you get your bible from.

Evodius was the first Bishop of Antioch, and he is credited with being the first person to call the followers of Christ, "Christians", as shown in Acts 11:26. See Eusebius, book 3, chapter 22.
Saint Ignatius (35-107), the second Bishop of Antioch wrote a letter to the Smyrneans in 107 A.D..
In this letter is recorded the first known use of the words "Catholic Church"...

Martin Luther followed Christ and became Holy (Set apart) during a very wicked, turbulent, corrupt time in the Catholic church. at that time there was no accountability for sin. Priests and leaders in the church (yes even pope's) were doing things that are just horrifying, having concubines, having expensive homes and Jewels while they made the nuns live in poverty and work for free, they were going to widow's houses and saying "if you give us money we will pray your dead husband out of purgatory" whether the widow could afford it or not was of no consequence to them. Lots of greed, corruption and unbiblical activity going on. So Martin Luther broke away and in fact they wanted to Kill him (The Catholic church of that time) and I think they did kill on of his partners. So Martin Luther became a "true Christian" he followed Jesus through the Holy Spirit and not a man made religion or denomination built to put fear in the hearts of men to serve THEM. Jesus addresses all this stuff in the bible, Particularily the book of Galations which is my favorite book of the bible. I recommend anyone who questions "how the church" can "do this or that" read galations and see that God was not caught of gaurd by the horrible thing done "in his name". He will say to those people "I never knew you".That's another promise in his word that truly will come to pass. Nobody gets away with anything in the end. All sin will be exposed. Woe to those who take Christ's name in vain and use it for their own gain and exploit people.

Catholicism singled itself out in 936 AD when the Pope unilaterally rejected the decisions of an Ecumenical Council. Other than that, you have a good point.
