I just recently bought a Yamaha flute. The guy who sold it to me said not to keep any papers inside. Am I allowed to keep a fairly large cleaning cloth inside?

I ama professional flutist and flute teacher. You should not keep anything inside your case like paper, a pencil, etc. The cleaning rod that came with it ususally has a groove in which to fit. If you have an outside zippered cover, them you can keep the cleaning cloth attached to the rod for INSIDE cleaning - and perhaps a microfiber cloth for wiping down fingerprints can be kept there, too. Do NOT ever us a any kind of *silver cleaning cloth* on your flute - the chemicals in it will destroy the pads, your flute will leak and not play the right notes, and you will have to pay between $200 and $500 to have a *student* flute repadded. A professional flute is constructed differently - a repad can cost well over a grand - so we learn to make our pads LAST!!

A Yamaha is a GREAT brand of flute to have! When people ask for suggestions, it is always in the top three or five that degreed, reputable teachers recommend. If you want to learn more about the flute, go to Yahoo Groups and join FLUTENET. There are about 3,000 of us there, from student beginners to professional players and conservatory teachers - we learn a lot from each other!

here is an article about caring for a wood flute, and an article about flute care including storage. Try the 2nd site first.

Found another. Type care of flute or similar words in your browser and you should get a list of sites that should be helpful.
