I am a private seller in the UK and am selling for the first time !

i am selling my laptop on ebay.co.uk . i did all the listing writings and everything. But now i am stuck with the VAT thing!

I am in the UK and my starting bid is £299. The ebay has said listing fees is £2 and this includes VAT (luxemburg VAT) where applicable!!

Is the VAT payable for the listing fees only or is it for the whole price??

i.e. like if my laptop goes for £300 and £20 for postage total= £320. Will i pay VAT for £320+ebay fees??? or it only for ebay fees i.e. listing anf final fees???

please help. thanks.

You cannot charge VAT on any goods you sell if you are not registered for VAT. You can only register for VAT once your sales turnover hits £63k in any 12 month period. If you are just selling a personal item, not only is VAT not chargeable, but you are highly unlikely to reach the VAT threshold.
You will be charged VAT by ebay on the fee they charge you for listing the item. This VAT won't be recoverable by you if you are not registered for VAT. Ebay can't charge your purchaser VAT as ebay is not selling the item - you are.

You don't pay VAT on secondhand goods and never on postage & packing. You only pay for the listing and a final value fee. Ebay pay VAT so actually the listing fee is £1.71 but with VAT added the total listing fee amount is £2. Hope this helps and puts your mind at rest.

Don't panic!

What Ebay is telling you is that within their fees, £2 of that is for VAT, just as almost every other thing you buy in any shop contains VAT in the price.

Unless you are a business seller with a turnaround of over £61k per annum, you do not need to register for VAT. Likewise, when Ebay charges you its Final Value fee (assuming your item sells), there will also be a portion of that fee which is VAT.

If you were a business seller, you can register with Ebay so that they don't charge you the VAT portion of the fee.

Nothing to worry about

Best of luck

It means that eBay is charging you £2 in total.

eBay will have to pay the VAT, not you.
