I've been told that most MP3's use CBR (constant bit rate) but that VBR (variable bit rate) is much better- what do I need to do to start creating MP3's which use Variable Bit Rate?

what ever your mps program is to make ur mp3's, look in the options or preference and change it to variable bit rate. the only thing with VBR is that it take up more space.

well VBR will just change the bit rate to fit the audio at the point in the song, so really it will make the mp3's a tiny bit smaller, however myself I just prefer CBR.
Most app's will allow you to save in VBR, Wavepad does along with most.

probable no longer. maximum folk can not, despite if while archives are converted to smaller bit costs or from one format to a various, there is a few archives loss and/or compression that has effects on sound high quality. once you are trying out archives that have not been converted from one cost or format to a various, i.e. you're listening to a Michael Jackson music in 320kbps and then a Prince music in 128kbps as a exchange of taking the MJ music from 320kbps and changing to 128kbps, you probable won't have the means to tell the version. There is additionally different motives for no longer having the flexibility to tell the version, different than your having average ears, such through fact this form of headphones you're utilising. the extra constructive the headphones, the extra you are able to hear the version.
