Hey guys, i really want to start taking pictures (good pictures) and i want to buy a new camera. I'm not really that excited about buying a $700 one like my friend has but if thats what it comes down to then idk...
but anyways, i don't know anything about cameras so if you have any suggestions on nice cameras (brands, types) that aren't too expensive, that'd be great!

My very best advice is to buy secondhand!

$700 is not a lot of money for a very good photography kit. I suggest firstly, for the sake of quality, go for a good secondhand medium format camera.

My favorite is the Mamiya RZ62 II. You won't be sorry. Loads of professional photographers are ditching very good film equipment any paying $20 000 and upwards for the pleasure of high end digital cameras

Digital cameras at the quality you appear to want costs +++++. Analogue camera equipment is below its regular value so its a good time to buy.

Film negatives can be scanned in to Photoshop and manipulated. This is a good way to get the best of both worlds without the high cost.

IMO you should first take a photography class at your local high school or community college. The classes will give you an understanding of light, ISO, f-stops and shutter speed. You'll learn the Rules of Composition and how to use them.

Once you're grounded in the basics you'll have a better idea of what camera you want to buy.

When you decide to buy, go to a local real camera store - one that only sells cameras, not 10,001 other things and cameras. The salespeople in a camera store are trained and knowledgeable about the cameras they sell. They can answer questions, help solve problems and offer intelligent advice. Some stores even ofer an hour or two of hands-on instruction with your new camera. Try getting any level of service at a discount store or over the internet.

Buy a used Pentax K1000. (£100)
It will teach you a great deal .

Digital?
Canon and Nikon seem to be favoured at present.
