Try going into safe mode by tapping F8 when your computer starts up.

Explained here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true

Then go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Remove Norton Anti-Virus.

Then restart your computer.

No luck? Start in safe mode again, but this time try System Restore.

Start > Help and Support > Choose "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" > Choose a previous system restore point and follow instructions.

Explained here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

For an alternative anti-virus, try AVG Free: http://www.download.com/3000-2239_4-10741647.html

Boot the system to safe mode (tap F8 repeatedly on boot to get this menu option)
UNINSTALL norton, try again.,

Did the system boot OK up till installing Norton ? If so leave it uninstalled, try avast from www.avast.com for a BETTER AV solution and it's free

This: "i in my opinion have a crap load of viruses on it and secret agent ware" "it may be the secret agent ware and viruses" Sounds to me like it could be too previous as a results of do something yet format and rebuild. regardless of you do, get some Anti-virus utility. A single virus would properly be terrible to no longer point out "a crap load". no longer being in a position besides in risk-free mode kinda tricks you're able to already be staring at significant OS situation. you could try booting off your abode windows CD and attempting a restoration or installation the OS on a distinctive partition. you're able to would desire to look up the thank you to try this if your uncertain. the two way, be waiting to place in virus utility authentic away in case you get it up and working. in case you do no longer, you will maximum probable only re-contaminate your device (except you format, which will delete each and every thing). sturdy luck.

Hold down F8 key when starting the computer. Select either "safe Boot" or "last known good configuration".
