I have two 4 year old healthy maine coons. One of them vomits from time to time and she makes a weird/loud coughing noise. I thought it might be hairball but it isn't. It's watery and dry food that she swallows whole. I don't know if I should switch to canned food or what. Can anyone help?

Not chewing. Could be a tooth problem. Research the brand of food they are eating and get your cat to a vet.

Definitely call your vet asap. Could be anything from food intolerance, GI issues to heart problems. Since Maine Coons have a VERY high prevalence of heart disease I would STRONGLY recommend you see a veterinary cardiologist for an echo as preventative in both your cats.

Cats can vomit as easily as people can cough. Usually they vomit food like that because they've over-eaten and don't like the feeling of it. Don't be too concerned if its only time to time, however if she is vomiting almost constantly or more frequently than usual, contact a vet. She could have something blocking her intestines then or it could be poison.

Don't worry too much, though. From what you described, your cat sounds fine.

One of my cats started to throw up a lot after we got a third cat. The new cat eats quickly and will barge in on the other cat when he is finished, so I'm pretty sure my cat was throwing up because he was trying to eat quickly before the other cat moved in. I've seperated them when I feed them and started doing several smaller portions throughout the day and it seems to have solved the problem. Maybe your kitty is just eating too quickly or too much at one time.

Most likely he is overfilling his belly, I had this problem with my cats. I cut thier portion size down and just give them a little at a time and this has almost elimianted the problem. If this does not help then I would see the vet.

I don't know why, but one of mine does that too. I think he eats too much at once and then drinks a lot. The combination is not too pretty. If it just happens every once in a while I wouldn't be worried.

This is a perfect kind of question to call and as the vet, or to ask the vet when you are in for her annual. Really it is
