For largely the same reason that most people think that things float around in the Space Shuttle because it's so far from Earth that it has escaped the Earth's gravitational field.
They were told so, everyone else around them believes it, they never questioned it.

Actually what we need is a theocratic religion which means we have one form of worship that God approves, and is directed by God himself. Right now, there are many on the "broad and spacious road" that Jesus spoke about, but which sadly, leads to destruction. They are letting man-made ideas, philosophies, and traditions guide them, that is why so many are involved with a "theistic" religion.
