Raw fish is perfectly healthy when you know what kinds are safe, it is fresh, and how to prepare it. You'll notice that only certain kinds of fish can be eaten raw, not all so it's not like you want to pull any random fish out the river and eat it raw. Also, it must be extremely fresh so it can classified as "sushi-grade", not like the stuff you see in the grocery store that's been sitting for days. And lastly, you need a trained sushi chef who knows how to properly clean and prepare the sushi, not some hack who was flipping burgers the day before.
Sushi is definitely an acquired taste and not for everyone. But that doesn't mean it isn't safe. Many feel eating beef isn't safe - ever hear of mad cow?

There is a specific type of fish for sashimi and sushi, you need the freshest top grade a1 fish. So those things like poison and bacteria don't happen. The sushi chefs have to handle the fish in a very careful way so no one get sick from the raw fish.
That's why I get my sushi from a sushi restaurant and not the grocery store.

Yes AND no. If the fish is not properly stored, cleaned, or prepared, there is a greater chance for bacteria to grow. Although I do not like sushi or sashimi, I know plenty of people who do. None of them have ever gotten sick from it. You just have to be careful which restaurants you go to.

If it has those things raw, why would cooking it make it any more appetizing?
Mmmm... cooked lead and cooked pesticide.
If you're eating sashimi from a restaurant you trust--one that's been around for a while and maybe has a good reputation in the community, then I would trust the chef there. He'll buy only the best, and will inspect anything he buys before serving it. He has no interest in making his customers sick.

Why....
Because they've been eating it for thousands of years.
The Vikings ate it to. They just didn't make it as appetising as the Japs.
Not all fish is sashimi acceptable, however alot are.
That's what the Wasabi is for!
To kill off any bacteria that may be present.
So don't eat it without the Wasabi & you will be fine.

Sometimes mixing a lot of different types of seafood in one meal can upset your stomach. Dont know why but its happened to me a couple of times. Doesnt mean the food is bad ,its just your reaction to it.
