MiG-25R Foxbat-B, Mach 3.2 123,524 feet

The Mach 3.2 flight resulted in the destruction of the planes engines. While there are 3 faster planes in the world, namely the SR-71 Blackbird, the X-15, and the newest, the X-43A Scramjet (just broke mach 12 i think) none of these are fighter planes. The MiG-25, is the first on the list of planes to qualify as a fighter plane.

While the MiG 25 was recorded as the fastest it couldn't do that regularly, so since that's a poor claim I don't feel that pointing out that one of the three aircraft we know as the Blackbird was designed to carry weapons. The other designations were A11 and YF12A, as the YF12A the SR71 was an experimental (Y) fighter (F). The fastest single engine fighter was the F106 Delta Dart at around 1525mph.

The English Electric Lightning has also done M3, but not with weapons. Lots of fighters claimed M2.5, none could sustain that for more than a couple of minutes because of the massive fuel consumption. Only a few planes can sustain M1+ without afterburning, they include the F22 Raptor and Eurofighter Typhoon, so in practical terms the modern fighters are fastest because they can do it for a long time and they can do it every day.

Speed does not a good fighter plane make. The ability to vary speeds quickly is what wins dogfights. Hands down, the best fighter jet in the world right now is the F-22. Way to many specs to put on here, much less for me to remember. You can find a lot of info on it just doing a search on yahoo for F-22 or Raptor. The only reason the U.S. hasn't completely taken the f-15 out of service is because of the cost of the Raptor and the rate at which they can effectively be produced. Last I read there are something like 28 F-22's scattered around the globe with a majority being at an airbase in Alaska. I dont know how accurate that information is now. I've also read they have the ability to be anywhere on the planet in a matter of hours.

It depends on what you mean by the term fighter. The Mig-25s, YF-12s, and EE Lightnings were interceptors. Great for attacking bombers, but almost useless in dogfights.

The fastest true fighter is the F-15, at 1850MPH. It can physically go faster, but airframe and engine limitations prevent it. The new F-22 has a posted top speed of 1600MPH (it might be faster though).

Technically, the MiG-25R is a reconnaissance aircraft, and not an interceptor or fighter. Though you're correct about the MiG-25 in general.
