I've read the Bible, several times. I own 9 Bible,s the Tanakh and the Pentateuch. I've studied it in Hebrew and Greek. I've studied the history of it as well as the culture it comes from, along with the cultures of the "outsiders" who lived among those who wrote and believed in the Bible.
There's nothing frightening about it at all. What's frightening is when followers of it use it to justify their hatred of other people, as well as their actions.

I read about half the bible years ago, but I didn't finish because I thought it was too preachy, a little boring and badly written. Too many inconsistencies. Inadequate plot and character development. If I notice these flaws in any other book, I stop reading it. Why should the Bible be exempt?

For me, since you asked, it is because the nature of the flesh is to deny the good it will do. There are times when I can convince myself that reading the Bible will 'waste' time. That, when I really think about it, is the rebellious nature that is human, which is enmity towards God.
Thank God that He has given me His Spirit who then counters the sin nature, and reminds me how stupid I am for thinking that way. How many times must I be helped by reading the Bible before I will never have those thoughts in my head again? I think the counting still may be done!
So living a life of Faith is important to re establish every day, and the reapplication of faith I must do every day, yesterday's faith being too little for me today.
Those who do not have the Spirit of God living in them will not see this help. They are not getting His Counsel. They do not see the scriptures as 'living' and able to counter the nature of man.

I read it all the time. I love trying to match it up against reality, and I love comparing Bible history with other records. I love Greek and Roman mythology, too.

I still go back once in a while and read some of the funny parts, just for kicks. But mostly I stay involved with more serious reading.

I've read it. It's a collection of stories designed to frighten people into certain beliefs and behaviors.
I prefer a different God.

I don't really read the Bible much because I see how confused people who are reading it are.

The OT is truth. The NT is a temptation of the Serpent. There is no other way into Heaven aside from what The Father said.
