It's much the same as the so-called essence of being straight. To be straight, you are attracted to the opposite sex; to be gay, you are attracted to the same sex. All the rest - culture, subgroups and so on are just accretions that support and help to define that fundamental sexual orientation.

This is a perspective of a Bi Christian; me.
The essence of being Gay is the nature of what desires are there. I believe that the desires are there for a lot of people, maybe all. Not all act upon those desires who have them.
If someone says they have those desires then they are thought to be Gay or 'curious'. If they act upon the desires they may be called the same. If they continue to do them or admit they are Gay then they are called Gay.
But if they never act upon those desires and never admit to acting on those desires then they are called Straight.
The essence of being Gay is acting upon those desires that so many do not, or will not act upon. The nature of those desires is sin. And we all have that sin nature whether we act upon them or not.
