Ha, "something else that works just as well is a mirror"? Don't listen to that, birds are not stupid, nothing can substitute the company of another bird. It would be a good idea to get another to keep her company, but if she gets lots of attention from you every day its not necessary. If it was me, I would get another bird for her.
Birds can become less tame or harder to tame when they are in pairs, but you can just separate them for a while until you have tamed the new bird then put them in together. I wouldn't consider it a big problem. There are lots of tame birds kept together without losing their human-friendliness.
But you must introduce them slowly! Put the 2 cages together for a few days until they know each other, then introduce them both into the new bigger cage which the new bird will probably be in.
It shouldn't matter what sex you get, budgies rarely breed without a nest box, but maybe it would be best to get another hen if you do not want this possible problem.
Make sure you are positive of her sex before getting another bird though! Email me if you need help.
Cage size - as big as you can afford. The cages sold for budgies in most pet shops are much to small even for a canary!
L 32" x W18 -20" is what I would recommend as a good size for 2 budgies.
Never get a round cage, it makes the bird dizzy, as you can imagine, because there is no back, no front, birds don't like it.
A good idea is to get her wings clipped since she comes out of her cage. I've lost many birds because of unclipped wings, it's bound to happen sooner or later with a tame bird. You don't think of it as important until your bird is gone, and you wish you had done it.
Nutrition is very impotant for birds, and a seed only diet is not sufficient, its akin to eating bread and butter every day for your whole life. Birds fed only seeds die from malnutrition, fatty liver disease, obesity, or a number of other things. The average sifespan of a budgie according to a lot of books is about 7 years. A budgie should live to 15 or 20 years easily with correct knowledge on how to care for them properly.
Feeding Harrison's Organic bird pellets and some fresh veg is the easiest way around this problem. Either that or a LOT of fresh fruit and veg every day, with some seeds.
My birds get Harrisons, veg, and I've started giving them seed sometimes.
Sprouts are VERY good for birds. (and humans) You wouldn't believe how good they actally are. Freshly sprouted seed is the best thing you could give your birds so its worth considering that.
Maybe you know all this already but just incase you dont, and for the benefit of other readers, I'm writing it.
I think thats all, so
Good luck!

It is a good idea for a budgie to have a friend, but something else that works just as well, is to put a mirror in it's cage. They think it's another bird and it makes them perfectly happy.
I found this out from a pet store owner, who wasn't trying to sell me another bird. LOL.
Good Luck!

I think that if you get her a friend she will be happier, (That's if you are not always in the house to play with her)
but be warned she most probably will be more affectionate to her friend than you! So don't get upset if that happens,
Hope that helps

if you were to get another bird it would lessen your birds desire for your social interaction.
