As an atheist I should not be able to answer this, but!!!
As far as I can see 'Norman W' is just about the only answer that has got anywhere near the mark.
All 'Christians' started out as part of the Roman Catholic Church, they eventually all went their own way for very important reasons? ( Like a King of England wanted a few divorces). The Catholic church didnt go along with that idea, so this King made himself the head of the English Christian church! (Just like a fairy tale is'nt it)???
I digress! This Christian 'fast' is meant to comemerate the time the Christian 'God' Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.
It's no longer practised of course because it's not an easy job, like not being able to get a few divorces if you fancy it.
I wish these 'Christians' could at least get their act together and give a combined united reply to questions of this sort.
Bear in mind that their are not many Muslims that do not fully understand what Rammadan is all about.
If you want to conduct an interesting exercise type into this yahoo search engine 'Holy Trinity' have a look at all the different explanations that are given by Christians, and yet this is the basic requirement of calling ones self a Christian, to believe that 'God is the Father and the Son and the Holy ghost, they surely should be able to understand that?
Hope this helps?

Fasting is a spiritual discipline practiced by many Christians however it is not commanded nor are there specific days or times of fasting that must be adhered to.
Some churches encourage members to fast during certain seasons or on certain days, but those things are not ordained for all Christians and fasting is largely a personal matter between each individual and God.

The primary fasting period for Christians is the 40 days of Lent, when Christians look to abstain form certain items. Other than that, there is not specific period when all Christians must fast, outside of what is felt necessary for one's personal faith and spiritual growth.

Yes the Bible teaches fasting. Historically Protestants would fast at least twice a year in preparation of the Lord's Table.
1 Corinthians 7:5b
"that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer"

Yes, Christians do fast sometimes, usually if they are praying for something in particular. It does say we are to fast in the Bible. Jesus did.
Lent (4 weeks before Easter) is another example but does not necessarily mean giving up food. It could be television, or chocolate or computer time, or whatever .......

hello,
this is a good question,,
the bible mentions fasting in many many areas, jesus himself fasted, As christians we are advised by God that Fasting is a powerful and useful tool to:
A: clear the spirit to receive further guidence from God
B: Humble oneself in reverance for God (especially during dire circumstances)
C: it is a spiritual practice that can increase the effectiveness of ones prayers.
There are many other reasons why it is good for a Christian to fast, and there are no set religious mandatory time frames that we needed to do it in. as God has given us the freedom.
There are times when God will impress upon an individual or church to fast something that is of value to them such as food or anything. it is merely a way of setting aside something that may normally get in the way of what God is trying to say to you.
God hates the idea of a fast simply for the sake of religion. Above all he wants to be close to us.
i can tell you that whenever i am facing any major concerns or decisions in my life, i also may fast for a time of my choosing to seek God.
thankyou for the question

Christians do fast, to get closer to God, but we can fast anything, if we can't not eat we can fast TV or anything we would normally find hard to live without.

Yes they do fast. Sometimes it's as simple as giving up something you REALLY like for a month or so. Like soda, candy, coffee, fast food, whatever you really like and would be hard to give up for a month. (Could even last longer if you want it to.) It doesn't have to be totally nothing for a time. But when it is like that, you grow spiritually closer to God. I haven't done that one myself, but I know many who have and that is what they say.
