There are ignorant people in all groups... but after being in here, I see a lot more ignorant Believers (ignorant of others beliefs, ignorant about basic Science, etc) than I do Atheists. Truly ignorant... not just asking stupid questions to get a rise out of people.... I think the most annoying part of it, is they truly believe a lot of the stuff they say without realizing it's propaganda started by a particular church to draw followers to them... and, THEY DON'T CARE what they say, even when it's a lie!

First, let's not use the term "ignorant" in this context. It just makes people defensive. But if you ask where logic and reason lies, I have to say it is with the atheist.

The problem is that religious beliefs are often founded on something called "faith." Basically, this is defined as belief in the absence of evidence, or even in the face of evidence to the contrary. Creationism is an easy example, because the evidence to the contrary is so overwhelming.

People would not accept this standard of belief in any other category than religion. Do you have "faith" in your choice of make and model of car, or do you check them out? Do you have "faith" about the evening news, or is your trust won by a news media's consistency, by showing pictures of what they describe, etc. Arguments that they might be faking a given scene are curious at best, because the ease with which such fakes can be uncovered. Yet in questions of religion, such credulity, even to believing in a world-wide conspiracy to deceive (called "the work of Satan") is the recommended mental attitude.

So I will ask you: who is the more reasonable, atheists or believers?

No group of people has the "market cornered" when it comes to ignorance. Ignorance is not lack of intelligence.

Ignorant is being unaware or uninformed, often implying a lack of education or knowledge. In this sense, all humans are ignorant because none of us knows it all (even the Know-it-Alls).

In terms of Religion and Spirituality, Atheists lack firsthand knowledge about Faith. Believers, on the other-hand, tend to fill in the details about reality to fit their belief system without any direct objective data to make logical analysis of the way things are.

Neither has the right to feel arrogant in their personal choices. The fact that both groups tend to believe "I'm right, You are wrong" is the best evidence of their mutual ignorance.

To me, neither is ignorant, or both are equally ignorant. Neither side really knows the true nature of the universe. They can lay claim to knowledge all they want, but who's to say we're not still plugged into the Matrix, or part of some other exotic reality that we haven't even considered? Maybe there is a God, maybe there isn't. All anybody REALLY knows is that they popped into this life at some point where memories are increasingly fuzzy the further back you try to remember.

As a blanket statement, it doesn't apply to either group.

However, it's clear from the postings that we see here that many believers are utterly ignorant about what atheism is, and most of those same believers are ignorant about the nature of religion, how belief works, and how to evaluate an argument (oh, and about how to spell "atheist").

The person below me is a perfect example. In the United States, anyway, most atheists were raised Christian, and there is no sign here that atheists are unaware of religion, as she falsely claims. She's either simply unaware of the facts, or has decided that making that claim will help her to defend her false religious beliefs.

On the other side, there doesn't seem to be any systematic ignorance among the atheists who come here.

The PC thing is to claim that both sides are ignorant of each others' positions, but in fact that's simply false. The atheists here have demonstrated a good understanding of religion, which of course isn't surprising in light of how drenched in religion American culture is. But many - possibly most - of the believers here demonstrate deep ignorance of anything other than their own personal positions on these questions.

Well this question is pointless as everyone is going to point at the other . . . but what the hell I'm bored:

I dont think either of us are ignorant I think Christians have been misled by family figure heads since birth so they dont know anything else as Christians tend to surround themselves w/ only like-minded people and are very well trained to respond w/ automated answers (god did it, because god said so, etc) w/o applying any thought or common sense. If they would reflect on the religion they so adamantly follow w/ no reasoning behind it they would see how hypocritical, make believe, and impossible anything in their book is. Some of them actually take it as a historical, actual document!! I just cant stand behind something w/ no physical evidence, no actual written history, no possibility for any of the things it speaks of to have ever really happened. At least evolution has stepping stones of actual fact, religion has nothing but "faith".

It has been my experience in life that truly ignorant people are the last to know. They think that sense they can't understand what the other person is talking about then the other person has no idea what they are talking about.I am talking about anything they can't understand, this is not just limited to Religion.

Humans are ignorant ! Ignorance is not limited to any one group of people!

Any time any person thinks they have all the answers, they usually have tunnel vision!

Believers in what exactly? And ignorant of what, exactly? I am ignorant of a lot of things; design tolerances for a Boeing 777 for example. Or painting landscapes. Completely ignorant of the history of 3rd century Indian poets as well. Clueless.

Neither one per se, provided that their belief is based on their own experience, it is not ignorant to take one side of an issue over the other.
