Duty free means there is no duty, or tax, on a give product.

If you are leaving the United States to go over seas, you can buy alcohol in a duty free shop that has not federal excise tax on it at a considerable savings. The only provision is that you are supposed to consume and finish it while outside the country.

That said, the country you are bringing into might have restriction on how much you can bring in, you should check.

You can also bring a certain amount of alcohol back into the United States "duty free," that is without paying a customs duty or tax. Again you should check with U.S. Customs as to the amounts.

Duty free means you dont have to pay tax on it, Also no alcohol over 70 proof is allowed in checked luggage or carry on. I dont believe ANY is allowed in carry on but you can purchase beer on the plane (makes sense right? hah...)

Duty free refers to items that are sold (often at airports) without tax. Typically a bottle of liquor is permitted. Beer may also qualify.
