Confession is a mediation,, between the priest and you, to purpose of this come from the scripture, that says confess your sin one to another,
I see no reason to lie about what sins i have committed, for this would completely defeat the purpose of the confessional.
and remember that God is in that confessional with you and knows when you are lying.
when you are in the confessional you are not lying to the priest, you are lying to God.
and you have just missed your opportunity to be forgiven for the sins that you are lying about.

I love this question its just perfect.
Confession is supposed to be a sacrament to Catholics, something that sets them apart as they get the chance to atone for their sins before they die. Better than the rest of the plebs. How nice.
To think of someone going into confession and lying is so funny. I guess they would then have to confess they had lied..? good grief you could be in there all day!
Wonderful question that highlights the utter inherent hypocrisy

You're probably more curious about possible lying by adult Catholics, but I went to confession first at the age of 6. I thought a sin was something absolutely criminal, so I lied and said I stole a wallet! The priest started laughing and said, "You didn't really do that, did you"? I insisted and he still laughed.

I am not Catholic, but a friend once told me that on her very first confessional (aged 7 or 8), she lied - mostly because at that age, she didn't havean understanding of right or wrong, and the fact she attended a Catholic school and surrounded by nuns all day pretty much scarred her for life.

That is a terrific question. I did not withhold any of my "sins" in Confession, but went to a Jesuit College, and at th end of Confession after I had been given my "penance" the Priest would address me by my first name. It embarassed me at first, but I got use to it.

No but then I have never been to confession. I confess direct to God through Jesus and know I am forgiven because of the blood of Jesus.

I'm not a catholic but , what if I did ? that man on the other side is just a plain ol sinner like I am .What makes him so special ? Go to God your self, no middle man required.

I don't lie in confession because I go straight to Him and ask me to forgive me my sins.
When He died the curtain from the Holy of Holies was ripped in two giving us access to pray to God anywhere, anytime.
Have you not read that in your bible?
If you knew The Christ you could not lie anyway because He knows what your already going to say.
