Be more gentle with your play and use a cat-wand instead of letting the cat play with your hands. Make sure that the cat does not have any bites or scratches under his fur which might be painful when touched, causing him to retaliate. If your cat has not been neutered and the cat is attacking you it is way past time to get that done. Never pinch, poke, hit or otherwise be physically violent with your cat in play; they do believe that turn about is fair play. Good luck with your kitty!

some cats can get over excited when they play and include your hand as a toy. my cat was like this for ages and only now she's 10 she has calmed down. I learnt to just wait until she had calmed down before I touched her because otherwise she would just bite or scratch. Some cats also have a pat limit...so if they're on your lap and your patting them they might suddenly lash out to say "hey....that's enough of that" Some cats like to be patted and patted while others prefer just a couple of pats on the head and then be left to themselves.

Most of the answers you have been given cover it . Yes your cat wants to play and he loves the attack, just like when he is outside and jumping on a mouse or a bird, he jumps and sinks in his claws and bites, i bet the back legs go like rudders and dig in.
I bet if you say no quite sharply he will then start to lick you and be best mates again. he is just playing like he would if he had another cat by his side. To save your hands get him a wee friend to play with, then you can have the pleasure of two cats to love.

He isnt trying to be mean my Tootsie (pictured) does this all the time, my hand is constanly full of scratches! But she is the most lovable cat ever. If you just stroke your cat without playing with it it would probably be affectionate, but he probably still thinks your playing when you stroke it straight after a you play with it.

Your cat is just playing. A cats play is practice for adult life (catching mice, birds, rabbits etc) and one of the ways cats catch prey is by pretending they are not really interested then changing very quickly.
A sharp 'No' when the cat gets too violent will soon teach them when they have gone too far.

Aww! he is using all of his senses to 'attack and kill' just like
he is born to! this doesn't mean to say he doesn't love you,
it's just his natural instinct to kill his prey whether it be your hand, a toy, or mice! my cat goes for my feet as I am sitting down but he loves me to bits! Get a stringy toy on a pole instead of using your hand, or if you want to play rough use garden gloves and have a good rough and tumble with him.

is he a young cat? One of mine is 3yrs old and even at that age he tends to see everything as a game!! He does have his moments of wanting affection but mostly it's 'find and kill' at the moment!!! lol.
