Amontst the tomatoes available in the shops, many seem to have leathery skins, others are tasteless and the correct balance of sweetness and sourness is not there. Others do not produce a good puree for making soups and sauces. On the whole they are basically quite tasteless and I have given up on them. Is it because the farmers are purchasing cheaper seeds for their crops and the supermarkets are also buying the cheapest or is their some other reason. The same applies to many other fruits and vegetables. They seem to be sourced from the very cheap sources but priced normally. Does anyone know where to buy tasty tomatoes from.

unfortunately it's because they pick the tomatoes too early for shipping and production purposes.

if the tomatoes are picked when they're ripe they the companies would have to take care to provide us with a quality product. rather than doing that (and charging us for it) they just pick them right when they turn red and ship them out hoping they'll finish ripening en route.

just purchase them and leave them set on the counter or anywhere room temp. they'll finish ripening in a bit.

I think that is as a result of harvesting before they are ripe in order to be able to ship produce under refrigeration. If the produce is really fresh and ready for harvest, it wouldn't be able to with-stand the handling. If you can find, it your area, a produce stand where the produce is harvested daily by gardeners or small farmers, you can get some pretty fresh stuff. I too think that the tomatoes in grocery stores have NO taste. They are no sweet and the skins are tough. Hugh difference in corn too. Try a local produce stand.

The big chain stores buy their produce in bulk and transport it a great distance. The produce is picked before it's properly ripened so it can be less bruised when it makes it onto the shelves in the shops. Not being "vine ripened" affects the flavor and texture - in a negative way!

Don't know where in the world you live. Try and find a local farm market for the best produce.

For salads, I use 'taste the difference' mini pomodoros from Sainsburys. Either that or flavourripe.

I only use plum tomatoes on the vine for cooking. if you cannot get them in season, most Italian chefs suggest using a good brand of tinned plum tomatoes, as these will have been grown in season somewhere hot, and be packed with flavour.

Interesting to read all the comments above.

Don't forget the weather this year has been really bad. I've been growing tomatoes at home organically and in a greenhouse with very poor results. The industry has suffered as much as I have.

Buy some money maker tomatoes and grow your own. We do and they taste so much better.

I also would like to point out that on the vine toms make taste better but you are paying for the vine, which gets thrown in the bin.

Best bet is to grow your own...I agree..a lot of vegetables bought in Supermarkets are tasteless these days...could be because of lengthy storage before purchase..best bet is an old fashioned green grocers shop...we have one in our village and they do taste better. Still have the dirt on the carrots etc...just like the old days.

I agree with you entirely, tomato's are my biggest bugbear too. Tasteless muck. The only time I ever had a tomato that tasted like something was when I was on holiday in Malta. So if you can find a Maltese tomato distributor please let me know.

I moved from UK to Spain a few years ago and very quickly realised that all fresh foos here tastes as it did when I was a kid 50 years ago. I thought it was my taste buds and smoking that caused food in the UK to taste bland but it seems not to be the case. Tomatoes, carrots aand eggs in particular are much tastier in Spain.
