no, but we should be extreamly picky about who we give a visa to, whether its a vacation, fiance, or what ever type of visa. we should only allow people into this country who have a skill that is in high demand (picking lettuce isnt one of them) or people who are succesfull in their own country and dont need to stay here.

This 'solution' will not stop the problem from occurring at all. Sometimes it is not the system that is broken, it is the people that are running or using the system incorrectly.
An employer knows if they have an illegal working for them they will be fined heavily, does it stop some US employers doing that very thing? No.
As a visa holder you are suppose to inform the government of any move changes, while on your visa, if you don't you could get a fine. Do many legal immigrants do this? No, why many do not realize they have to as the lawyer never told them.
It's like driving licenses illegals are not suppose to get one in my state. The State found a 'ring' of DMV employees selling driving licenses to illegals out of one of the DMV offices last year. Are they suppose to do that for illegals? No. Does it happen? Yes
So which is at fault in all these cases, the system or the people running it?
*To the above post
To gain a H1B visa you must have a least a degree and/or highly need job skills, The US company has to prove you are NOT taking a job away from an American. They have to pay you more than an American, so the people coming in on this capped visa are highly qualified people, and also each country has a quota so it is not all from one area or country that people are coming.
Many companies now contract out/outsource to India and countries like that as the work force is cheaper, rather than use the H visa. So they come over and work as a contract workers for the Indian company who has a contract with the US company.

No, because visa approvals are based on documented needs. With a visa, at least we know they are here and what name they will be using on their official identification, and have some semblance of a background check.
We just need to build a fence to keep the illegals out. Then the employers can ask the government for visa workers to fill their needs instead of paying the poor folks an unlivable wage, fostering resentments and crime.
EDIT: Based on your additional comments
That's the 44% we know about, and like I said, at least they were screened to some extent before they were issued their visa. We have no freakin' idea how many illegals have crossed the border without documentation or with false documentation. All we can do is estimate somewhere between 12 and 20 MILLION! We have no idea who they are. That's a pretty wide gap, don't you think? I would say that is a problem.

That's going way too far. Stopping all visas would be absolutely devastating to international businesses, colleges and universities (many of which rely on international students who pay full tuition to stay open and foreign scholars to keep their standards higher than those of every other country in the world), major league baseball and the NHL (both of which rely heavily on foreign players) and the tourism industry. Also, one of the key strengths of the American economy is that a large proportion of the very most talented people in all areas want to move to America, and are able to do so. These people create a lot more jobs than the one that they take up.
What might be sensible would be to screen the visa applications more carefully, and require risky applicants to sign over some amount of money that the government keeps if they overstay their visa, but which they get back with with a standard amount of interest if they return according to the terms of their visa. Something like $1000, which would be a lot of money to most potential illegal immigrants, but not enough to keep tourists or foreign students from coming over, would be reasonable.

On the surface it sounds like a good idea, but we do need to allow people to come into this country to conduct business and spend their money at our tourist spots and colleges.
As for the idea of requiring they put up $1000 as collateral, it wouldn't make a difference unless we also tacked on a provision for immigration bounty hunters (haul them in to collect the money) Those who stay in the country illegally after having a visa make far more then $1000 by staying.

Your question assumes that we do in fact have "the situation under control" at this time; but that is not a fact. However I agree that all visas should be eliminated for any purposes until we have full gainful employment for all that are Citizens of this Nation.

We should atleast slow down on some of them. There is so much abuse. The H1B is being used not to help our economy, but to lower our incomes. Countries are using Student Visas to help with their weapons of mass destruction. This year, a A Philipine governmen official was caught helping nurses cheat on the board exam, and the US government put a temporary ban on them. It's lifted now. I was told both Philipines and India lack reliable accreditation on their colleges, and we have no assurance on the quality of people coming in on the H1B visa. I feel we need to ban certain critical majors for student Visa. We need o put extra safeguards to ensure that those who come here are truly qualified for the job. We need to make sure that those who we bring here to fill jobs that we are supposedly short of qualified American, are truely because of a natural shortage. The number one indicator for governments to examine that we actually short for certain jobs, is that the company had to give big pay raises and still need more workers.
