Because of a great discovery:
1578: Englishman William Harvey discovers blood circulation
1826 - Samuel Morey patents the internal combustion engine.
1877: Edison announces invention of microphone.

And common sense:
2001 - Same-sex marriage comes into force in Netherlands

Because April 1st is 'April Fools Day" and many people like picking on Atheists by calling them fools. Thusly, the day got attributed to them. (Wrongly IMHO)

you know what - many of my fellow atheists (skeptics - what have you) do indeed embrace April 1 as a day to celebrate all things rational.

why? because it proves our point. superstition is stupid. belief in the supernatural is stupid. theism is belief in the supernatural - and therefore stupid. belief in God is just like belief in April 1 - a fool's paradise.

educate yourself, and superstition vanishes. think for a minute - and April 1st is no different than any other day (just like Friday the 13th). don't think - don't educate yourself - and superstition remains.

believing April 1 is "special" is just like believing any other unproven, traditional hand-me-down from your parents, like God, Santa, the Tooth Fairy or Jesus.

April 1 and Jesus are equally ridiculous. so let's embrace the farce and celebrate April 1 as Atheist Rationalist Day! woooo!

Because some religionists must think you are a fool if you don't subscribe to their doctrine. They think it humorous to mock and goad people who don't worship their Gods.

They have a psychological reserve-chute that they can deploy to strengthen their faith when it is questioned or ridiculed.

It goes like this:

If someone questions them or mocks them, they are instructed to accept it as further vindication of their beliefs.

So the whole poop-flinging mocking thing is like a second level of super-irony. They throw their poop in a room full of mirrors while wearing a blindfold, laughing in a self-congratulatory fashion.

The fool says in his heart there is no god.

If even a fool knows it, what's your excuse?
