Yep, way to many. And having been a paramedic I've gotten the thrill of cleaning up others people's dumb stupid mistakes. I've seen the after effects of road rage, drunk driving, women putting on make up, people not paying attention, the list is endless. Of course some accidents are just accidents that can not be avoided no matter what, brakes that suddenly give, a heart attack while driving, but true accidents are rare. 99% of what I saw could of been avoided. All I can say is PAY ATTENTON to what you're doing, but mostly to what other people are doing.

Yes, I witnessed 3 or 4. I saw two people strike corner to corner at an intersection. I was sitting at the stop light. they went blazing past me, one on each side, after the impact. I saw a guy come through the median while I was stopped for road construction. No getting away there. He missed me, though, missed everybody and hit the end of a guardrail instead. I didn't ask him why he came across, but I was really wondering. That's a strange sight. I found some people laying by the road one rainy night, with the car upside down. Old folks with no seat belts, both thrown from the car. One alive, one dead. The alive one was so far off the road I never suspected anybody else was around until he woke up. That was a strange night.

Oh, yes, I have witnessed a few, but the one that stands out the most is one that I saw when I was much younger (maybe 12 or 13 years old), and will likely never forget:

I was riding in the backseat of my uncle's Jeep...I don't remember exactly where it was we were going, but we were on Interstate 45 in Houston, Texas, going southbound, I believe, and I just so happened to be looking out the window when I saw, on the northbound side of the freeway, an SUV (Ford Explorer?) do 2 or 3 doughnuts and literally flip over into the carpool lane. I will never forget seeing the driver's and backseat passengers' (KIDS, apparently) arms flopping around outside of the windows...it all happened so fast, and before I knew it we had already passed the accident up, but I climbed into the cargo area (with a stern reprimand from my uncle) to look out of the back window until I couldn't see anything anymore. I will never forget that for as long as I live. It's just so scary to think that you could be out driving to wherever, minding your own business, and something can happen in a blink of an eye that could kill or maim you, and a lot of times, it's not even your own fault.

I also remember a more recent (about 3 years ago) incident in which I was riding a Metro bus which had stopped to pick up some passengers, and apparently this lady was not paying attention to what was in front of her because all of a sudden we heard brakes squealing and felt the impact of her car hitting the back of the bus. I was sitting on the very back row, and the impact knocked me onto the floor (I didn't know it then, but I was two months pregnant at the time). This happened in the middle of the day, mind you...there was no way she could have not seen that bus if she'd have been looking. Everybody got off of the bus and a few of us went around to the lady's car to see if she was okay, and she must have hit her head on the door jamb because she was out of it and there was a huge gash on her left arm. The lady came to after a short while and looked at us like we were crazy, like this accident didn't just happen. The paramedics came in due time and the crazy lady didn't want to get out of the car, which was smoking from under the hood. I went around to the passenger side and saw a bag of marijuana on the floor, and there was a cut-up cigar by the gear-shift. I wonder if she was trying to drive and roll up a blunt at the same time? Not very smart, apparently. The police were also there, and I am pretty sure she went to jail for drug possession after she got out of the hospital, and for who knows how many other charges for causing the accident.

I served five years on the volunteer fire department in a small mountain community in Colorado. I have scraped a number of bodies off of guardrails and pavement.
