I'd like to get CCW permit. By California law, i know i have to take the weekend safety course and be approved by county or city LE. I'm wondering how likely it is that i'll get the CCW permit at all, even if i take the course. LA and SF Counties are very picky -- does anyone have experience with CoCo County? I have no law enforcement experience and no skeletons in my closet. This will be for personal defense only. Thanks.

Contra Costa County issues very few CCWs. You can try it, but it will likely be an exercise in futility. Check out the following web site for additional information.

Virtually none, about the only people who can get CCW in Contra Costa, Alameda, SF and other Bay Area counties are business owners.

Most of the Californian counties are like that, there are exceptions though, like Simi Valley, Mendocino and other rural areas. Some of the rural areas are virtually 'shall issue'.

Even the guy I car pool with who has friends in local police and Sheriff's department through being a Master Sergeant in the Airforce Reserve and works in intelligence can't get one. Being a good and proper person just doesn't help here.

I'm from Sonoma County originally so I think the situation would be similar. Your chances will probably be extremely slim in any urban/suburban part of California. To get a CCW you either need to be able to prove an extremely good reason to obtain it... i.e. you are being stalked and have already obtained a restraining order.... you have been a previous victim of assault or attempted murder....etc. Or you need to know the right people. For example, a late uncle of mine was friends with most of the people in the sheriff's department and he was a competition pistol shooter for most of his life. He had a CCW and he's the only person I know that obtained one in the county. That's my impression, you may have better luck than that, but they don't just hand them out in CA like they do in almost every other state. For God's sake, I've felt like I was being treated like a criminal when I purchased my last couple of firearms there. People in the Sporting Goods stores size you up, give you dirty looks....its guilt before innocense there. And it wasn't like I was buying a handgun....it was a 20ga 870 for quail and then a year or so later a bolt action 17HMR for squirrels

your odds are slim and none. Unless you're a reserve cop, a certain liberal politician, or can show a very, very, very good reason to need one, you stand no chance whatsoever of getting a CCW in California. Stop electing democrats and you can get a ccw law passed in California just like all the other non liberal states have done. Meantime, depend on law enforcemant to protect you. You know, the same law enforcement that the superior court ruled has no mandate to respond if they don't want to. Maybe you should try to get a grass roots movement started to regain the right to protect yourself without being arrested and jailed just for doing so, in your lovely liberal state. (I can say that, I was born and raised there). I moved to a real, free state to raise my kids. CCw's are given to any law abiding citizen here who applies and passes the background check.

Probably your best chance is to move to another state that is not controlled by wackos. We here in Missouri would love to have you and the real estate is more affordable. If you Californians change your presidential voting rules so that your electoral votes are split based on the votes, rather than "winner take all," that would be great.

If you want to move let me know.
