I can kinda agree with the first poster, so I wish we knew more about what you are looking for and why you choose these 2 vehicles. You obviously are looking to spend under 20K and don't need alot of seating for kids/friends. I guess the question is do you want a new car that's decent or would you rather have a really nice car that's only 2 years old? For the same $13K you could buy a really nice 2005 Maxima, Altima, Sonata or 04 Camry, Accord, Mustang V8. Between your 2 choices though I'd definitely go with the Elantra unless that Cobalt is the SS model which is alot of fun to drive.

I have an 01 Elantra and rented an 06 Cobalt Coupe when I was in Las Vegas.
I found the Cobalt to be a decent car but not without it's faults. Slow steering was my main issue. It seems like I had to make an extra effort to turn corners that my Elantra would have done effortlessly.
The ride was good not jarring like in a Civic but not to soft either.
It had decent enough power for everyday use but my Elantra seem to have a little more mid range power.
The Cobalt was as comfortable as my 01' but the 07' Elantra is bigger and even more comfy then my 01' so I think the 07' would have the advantage.
The Cobalt didn't do it for me in the ergonomic area. Some buttons and dials didn't seemed to be well placed. The Elantra's were always easy to see and use.
The most telling thing observation really comes from my girlfriend. She has 98' Cavalier (the Cobalt is it's replacement). After she drove it for a while she said it rode alot like her Cavalier ! From that I guess you can say The 07'Elantra is an improvement from the older model. The 06' Cobalt isn't that much of an improvement.

It sounds as if you've settled on these two cars, so considering others is out of the question. Between the two, deefinitely go with the Elantra. It is true that Hyundais have a reputation as being the "cheapy" cars on the market but here are some things to consider about the two:
1. The Elantra is one of the world's top selling cars (not in the US, but in other countries). It is one of Hyundai's most solidly built cars.
2. Hyundai does have a longer warranty. This was done in large part to convince consumers to give them a try. They are pretty tricky with what they will and won't warrant, but if you look at websites such as Edmunds.com you'll see that the Elantra receives pretty good marks and is recommended.
3. The Cobalt has never been liked by automotive trade magazines. It is a noisy and poorly built car. If you notice, they don't sell as well as they should despite the fact that more and more people are buying small economy cars. That's because they simply are not good cars.
Drive both and do your research, particularly with automotive websites that allow user feedback. Chances are, you'll see more positives about the Elantra.

I chose the 2005 AccentGT over the 2006 Cobalt. Part of it is brand loyalty, the rest is quality of build, and the crummy treatment Chevy delivers. Comparing the Cobalt, especially in a premium trim level, to the Elantra, I'd take the Elantra every time.

I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and has 67000 miles the only thing I have done are oil changes and a minor 45000 service which was 350. I just got new tires and brakes last summer other than that it is a pretty good car. I would also look at the Covalt which is like a Cavalier. I put 140000 miles on it over 4 years and never had any service on the car what so ever. It ran like a champ. Chevy is a good car as well. I spent about 12000 on that car back in 96 it may have increased but is a good car. Good luck

Elantra, anything but GM *blech*
Elantra is up and coming, but you're still going to get the "oh" response when you tell people what kind of car you drive. But at least people won't throw up on your shoes when you proudly hold up the keys going "hey guys, guess what I settled for? A cobalt!"
Seriously, a used car has more refinement and will garner a whole lot more respect than either choice. Please do some more research before settling for two cars you're going to have buyers regret about the moment you put your hand on the cheap feeling plastics and bland looking styles.
The new Honda Civics (2006 +) gain Kudos for the great appeal they have, why not check them out? Or check out some other Spec B. cars as well? Anything but those two, seriously

I would go with the Elantra because it will have a 60,000 mile warranty for the second owner. That means that if it has been driven 20,000 you will have 40,000 left on it. The Cobalt does not offer that. And anybody buying a used car wants a warranty.

Go with the Cobalt. It's more reliable than the Elantra. When you buy the Elantra, youre going to spend more time fixing it than driving it. If money's a issue though, get a used car like a 04 Nisan Maxima or Toyota Camry or something similar. I would rather buy a car with a couple years and miles on it than buy a new car and having to push it to the junkyard (elantra) or not being satisfied by the looks (cobalt)
