Im workign on a magnetic motor and i need some help

The time-honored method of 'seeing' a magnetic field consists of holding a piece of paper in the field and sprinkling iron filings on it.

As far as actually measuring a field, rent a magnetometer.

there are two easy ways i know of:
put a staple on a piece of string and see where it goes
another is to get iron shavings and drop them on it
