There are many famous artists, too many to list.
It helps to understand the school of painting they represent.
Jan Vermeer is a famous Dutch painter (the Girl with the Pearl Earring), Rembrandt was famous for portraits in the Renaissance; Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir and Degas were famous Impressionists, Jackson Pollock and DeKooning were famous modern painters, and David Leffel is a famous contemporary painter.
