My local motor mecahnic told me that my SUZUKI OBM's stator needs replacing. But when I ask for it at the dealers desk, they say they don't know the name "stator" but "ignition coil". I am afraid I might buy a wrong thing altogether!

a stator is the stationary winding in an electric motor.
an ignition coil fires the spark plug in an internal combustion engine

So, is your outboard electric or gas powered?
