I am a Titleist homer because I have shaved 5 strokes since getting a set of Titleist blades - I had a set of Callaway Fusions for 3 years and as time went on (and my swing got better) I started really hooking the ball and it wasn't because of my swing - it was because of the "offset" that game improvement irons have which gives you more time to get the club square at impact - if you are square with your swing but the offset is at a maximum, you will come through with a slightly closed club face - I bought a set of blades and it took me about 3 weeks to get used to them at the range but I am hitting the ball pure and my scores are dropping - if I block a ball to the right or pull a ball to the left I know that it is a swing flaw and not the club - I generally hit a 5 yard draw with medium/high trajectory - I have found that Titleist is at the top of the heap when it comes to blades but you are going to have to hit a few irons to see what really works best with your game and leave room for improvement - good luck

The best set of irons are the ones you hit the best. If you hit Ping irons better than Calloway, so be it. The trick is to get to a range and demo as many different sets as possible. You should remember that just because a guy works in a pro shop or golf store and wears a nice shirt doesn't make him a pro. He's a salesman. He wants you to buy something.
That being said, these guys do know a lot about golf and golf equipment, and if you are serious about making a purchase, they will treat you accordingly. If you are just there to whack a few shots with a demo driver, they know you're not going to buy, so why bother?
Take your time, get fitted, and don't use the price as an index of quality.

There is no single best set of irons. The best irons for one player may be a terrible set for another player.

Ideally you should go to a store, have them measure your swing speed, trajectory, etc. and then they can recommend a few iron sets with shafts that match your game and swing.

Then HIT them and decide for yourself which you like best. Only you can decide which clubs line up well and feel right when you swing and hit them.

Another option is asking golfers at the range if you can try a few swings with their clubs. I've found most golfers are happy to oblige.

If you don't have the option of getting your swing analyzed or hitting the clubs before you buy them, ask for clubs and shafts that match your game and swing (be honest). At minimum, swing the clubs in the store to get a general feel for which ones line up well and feel good when you swing.

It again depends on your expertise. I mean you can hand a rookie player a new set of Nike "blades" and they will tear up the set and do horrible. You can give a "Tiger" a set of cavity backs and he will do well, but it may cost him a stroke or two in a match. As for me, I use the cavity backs, I'm not good yet. This set will last me my entire golf life. (I take care of them like they were eggs) So.... if you want a generic answer, I will tell you to get a generic brand, cavity back, graphite shafts and the best grips you can afford.

Anything custom fit. A cheaper set of custom fit clubs will outperform a top of the line set of off the rack clubs any day of the week. Check out KZ Golf clubs if you're in the market for something new. They're top quality, custom made clubs, and aren't any more expensive than the top name brands.
