I would love to make a cute cake made out of stacked doughnuts, but am not sure how and what to use, i.e. frosting, or cool whip etc. to "glue" the doughnuts together. I would love links to instructions or help from people who have made these.

The site below has a instructions w/ picture for tiering doughnuts into a cake. The recipe uses whipped cream as the glue, but as one other answerer suggested, don't do it. Personal experience has taught me that you put whipped cream on cake/muffins only when it is to be served and immediately eaten. I would use an icing. Any icing will do - homemade or store bought. Sprinkles and colored sugars or candy bits/chips are a nice garnish.

What you could try instead of using frosting to stick them together is just use toothpicks. That way they will be asy to pull apart and you won't have them all covered in goo, and it won't change the taste of whatever glaze or frosting was already on them.

Definitely don't use cool whip or whipped creap, it's not sticky enough and will melt and make your cake collapse.

i would make a circle and layer them upwards, securing with long toothpicks (like the ones they use for buffets)
frost with whipped topping and place a barbie in the center..

make them in to her skirt!

you can even color the topping with jello for added flavor

use 1 box of jello. only add the hot water to dissolve the powder. when it's room temp or just a bit cooler whip in the topping. let that chill - take out from the fridge- let it get to room temp~ frost "skirt"

you can decorate the skirt with ribbon or candies too.

the kids should love that

buy unglazed doughnuts unless you make your own. then make a glazing of your own by carmelizing some sugar..put down a layer of doughnuts then use the glazing like glue. put glazing on top of the doughnuts then layer. after you get the layers you want, glaze the whole stack.
