On judgement day, EVERY soul will be held accountable for one, and only one, question:
From your free will, did you enter into the covenant of the New Testament for the salvation of your eternal soul...or not?
It really IS that simple.

I'd let the big guy know that I tried and tried... according to all I've heard, he'd know. And that I used my intellect (that he gave me) to make my own decision. Right or wrong, that's where I ended up.
If I wake up 10000 feet below, so be it.

It's not a chance, it is an OBLIGATION before God, His holy angels and His faithful Christians (saints)

no one has to explain themselves to God- God knows us better than we know ourselves, and believe you me, if you do not believe when you die- you will not be able to explain your way out of hell. Jesus paid the price for that, but you can only accept that before death. God knows your name long before He created you, or you were even conceived.

What would they explain? "I did what I wanted to do"? there will be nothing to explain. All truth would be there for all to see. Why try to explain something when it's all out in the open already? :)

No - it is not your rules - God decides, and we make our decision while we live.
