As you prepare for bed, imagine a family exactly like yours, halfway around the world doing the same things. Tucking in children, feeding babies, for those who do so saying evening prayers, thinking about what must be accomplished tomorrow. Put yourself in their position for a moment. They have the same hopes, dreams, loves and fears you do. Religions and politics create divisions where there are none. People are people. For those who pray, consider the needs of those you will never meet and include them in your prayers. For those who do not, consider the fears and hopes of those who do, and the comfort afforded by these rituals. Be kind to your families, be kind to each other, and be kind to yourselves (since you are very important to someone). Good night, and pleasant dreams.

Goodnight, and pleasant dreams.

There are numerous things that create divisions. Religion and politics are only two. Consider culture, economic status, social status, education, lineage, heath status, sexual orientation, nationalistic identity and history. Not all parents - even in the same society - share your middle class American perspective of what "hopes, dreams, loves and fears". People are people is an overly idealistic view of humanity - I tend to think that there is good and evil and that the parent that tucks their child into bed with care isn't equal to the parent that straps a bomb on their child to blow up a few Israelis.
