all the answerers are incorrect. the canadian immigration authority actually allows US permanent residents to enter canada without a visa, regardless of which country they come from (passport).

if you look at their website, you will find the piece that states what i just told you... that US permanent residents can enter canada with their passports and green card only... without needing a visa.

i've entered canada lots of times already with just my passport and green card. the first time i was asked what my status was in the US. that's when i gave the border official my green card and she said that it's good to allow me to enter without a visa despite the fact that my country of citizenship is on the list of countries needing a visa to visit canada.

so i don't know where the other answerers got their response from... but i know mine stands as i've done it time and time again.

PS. the US green card actually allows their holders passes on some visa-required country visits. mexico for one allows a green card holder to enter despite the fact that their country of citizenship would need a visa. cayman islands, jamaica and bahamas are also some examples.

No, you don't need a visa to go to Canada as you will be arriving from the U.S. However, as you are a permanent resident of the U.S., you must bring your permanent resident card with you.

The first answerer is correct.

Being in possession of a greencard as no bearing on anything regarding traveling to another country.

Below I have included a link to CIC Canada (Citizenship and Immigration Canada). If your home country is listed here you will need a visa to visit Canada.

Nicole - for future reference the person in question stated that they were a permanent resident and not a citizen of the United States.

Americans do not need a passport or Visa to go to Canada until 2008. You just need proof of residency ( Drivers license, Photo ID, etc.) I live near Niagara Falls, NY and travel to Canada several times a year. As long as you are a US Citizen you will be fine with just a picture ID until Jan. 2008. After that you will need a passport to visit Canada. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me. I would be glad to help.

Doesn't matter what country's 'green card' you have, matters what country's passport you have. So where are you from originally?
