There are several companies that make vhs to dvd recorders. However if the vhs tapes are copy protected the recorders won't work.

Yes. There are several brands of combination VCR/DVDr units on the market. Phillips and their NAP counter part under such brand names as Philco and Magnavox are some you may want to look at.
