Ancestors are WHERE YOU FIND THEM.
Databases, files, search engines etc are all efforts to offer you something quick and easy. And yes, many persons here have found their ancestors in these files. All of these are based on submissions from other persons (and none of the sites verify the submitted research.. it is assumed to be accurate with no oversight).
99% of my research is from sources other than databases. There are thousands of online resources where I find info (for myself or others) every day. Some are not even designated as genealogy sites. That isn't important.. if the relevant information is there.
Everyone has their "favorite". Much of that is simply being comfortable with using that, and probably ALL of those have some value. My personal goal is helping new researchers find other sources (online or off) that work when the databases don't have what they expect.
Understand that ancestry research has been around, long before the internet or computers. If you limit yourself to "one" best source, you may miss finding the ancestor and his/her records that are right under the radar.

I have both. I use Ancestry.Com for its records.
Don't take as fact everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid. They are user submitted. They come from folks like you and me. Most of the information is not documented. Many cases you will see different information on the same person. Then you will see the same information repeatedly on the same person and still no documentation. This means people are copying without verifying.
Use the information as clues as to where to get the documentation.

I think Ancestry.com records as second to none. I think the 1880 Census is FREE to use. You can also join for 2 weeks for FREE. But beware, once you start your search you will get hooked and find it hard to not pay the money.
I purchaed the Family Tree Maker software and got a substantial discount on my ancestry.com membership.

Both genealogy.com and ancestry.com are good, although I personally prefer ancestry.com.
If you don't want to pay ancestry.com's annual access fee (which is certainly not cheap), check with your local library to see if they have a library account with ancestry.com. If they do, you can use your library's public computers to research ancestry.com. Our local library offers this service and it is certainly not the only library to do so.

both are great - if you're willing to pay big bucks for world records. i have found that posting on bulletin boards has brought the best responses.

www.ancestry.com is excellent but you have to pay for membership, www.familysearch.org is completely free, and you are in the right forum for your genealogy question.
