Christian monks are men who first choose and later vow to live lives consecrated (or 'given over') to God.

Many live in monastic communtities (called 'Orders' or 'Congregations') and abide by certain rules of behaviour in order to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, and certain saints, more closely; but the first monks were holy hermits ('anchorites') and today many follow this ancient tradition.

The first Christian monk is generally thought to be St Anthony, who gave away wealth inherited from his family and then lived a long life in the desert, where he prayed, fasted and worshipped God.

He gained a reputation as a very holy man, and other men folllowed the same path, seeking to find god in solitary prayer and simple living.

Over time, communities of such men were formed, and monasteries were founded to house them. In the estern (orthodox) tradition, monasteries tend to be isolated places where monks pray continually, but in the tradition of the western church (roman catholic), monks became more involved in the world and over time many became priests in the church.

The first monks included many women,. The word 'monk' comes from the greek word 'monachos' which means 'alone', so it could apply to anyone. But over time, the word monk in English came to mean a male who lived as a monk. Women who want to live a consecrated life are called 'nuns' and the rules governing them are harsher and more restrictive than those governing men, plus of course they cannot rise above certain ranks.

As well, there are monks (and nuns) in almost all religions, including Buddhist and Hindu, as there have always been people who wish to live a life apart rom the world where their faith is the focus of their daily life.

Monks in the christian tradition have a long and fascinating history, and a glance at your local telephone book under (Catholic Church) or 'Greek Orthodox Church' will show that there are many, many Orders of monks and nuns, each with their own special spiritual view .

Some live lives of solitude and prayer while others are active in the world as teachers, preachers and social workers.

If you are interested in finding out more, check out the names of some well known Christian monks, such as the Jesuits, the Passionists and the Benedictines. Each have websites which will tell you more, and also how to make contact with them.

Cheers :-)

A Christian monk is a man who actually follows the words of the gospel, and leaves all his earthly possessions, and joins a monastery with other monks to live a secluded life of prayer, and work. They can also live as hermits alone. Some monks give up everything, and aren't allowed to own any possessions. They usually take vows of Poverty, Obedience, and Chasity. They're basically the male equivalent of nuns. Most monks are Catholic, Orthodox, or Anglican.

Monks are from particular religions... they are usually isolated from society and live in a 'monestary' away from the world. Some take a vow of silence, poverty, chastity (purity) or other things.
