It could happen, but it's not likely to. Now, if a deer was rather tame, it would probably be pretty easy. I did hear a story from a friend about his father dropping from his tree stand onto the back of a deer, and slitting its throat. But that's a little risky for my tastes, especially if it were a buck.

Yes people do, however it takes a long time to hone such a skill.
When I was in my teens I got interested in flint napping my own projectile points and that lead me to want to use them.
I have killed many deer and several bears using primitive weapons like hand made bows and spears. I however have only killed one deer with a knife, and it had a broken leg from a car crash.
Contrary to what some believe, it is not messy when done right. A well placed slice to the throat will take them out in seconds. Any way you slice it, it will be no more painful than if the deer is attacked by a natural predator.
I wouldn't try it and I have the skills to do so. I dont really desire to wrestle with a deer. I think that taking one with a spear proves enough.

I've read stories saying that Jim Bowie and his brother Rezin had the habit of killing deer with a knife. Their MO was to lasso the deer, and while one held the rope and more or less immobilized the deer, the other would ride in and either stab the deer with a honking big knife, or cut it's throat.
I've also read the tale of how a fellow in Kansas roped a deer and than got his butt whipped by the deer before he could turn it loose.
Wild deer are not nearly as harmless as the bunny huggers would have us think. Those antlers were made for fighting, and their hooves are like knives. Don't expect a buck, or doe for that matter, to let you cut its throat without resistance once you grab it. You were lucky not to get hurt when you grabbed that deer by the leg.
Before you try to take a deer with a knife, you'd better check with the Fish & Wildlife authorities concerning the legality. I have my doubts about it.

He asked you to stand back because a struggling or wounded deer is very, very dangerous! One hit from a hoof - they have four that would be flaying about - to anywhere on the head or your neck would be fatal. Years ago I shot a small deer standing on a hill, at the top of trail that went through really thick brush and it fell over backwards. We walked down to it immediatly - the trail was only two feet wide and both sides impossible to walk through, you had to grab the brush to get down it was so steep. The deer had falled about 60 feet. We were half way to the top, dragging it up by rack, my wife at the top and me pushing from the bottom when the 'dead' deer came to full life. Next thing we know - the deer drag has become a hand to hand combat situation with everyone fighting for their lives. To protect my wife I had to jump on it like a grenade in the old war movies to pin it down - then fumble for my knife so I could slit the throat. Even after slitting the throat - I had to stay on the that thing for several minutes before it stopped struggling. I have no doubt if it had gotten a leg or hoof free at least one of use, the wife or I, would have been heading for the hospital or worse. All I can say it is surprising how strong even a small deer can be when you are going at it hand to hand. I've seen videos of hunters, and people, attacked by deer. You should probably google it and see what your dad saved you from. It does not happen often - but when it does - people get hurt really bad.

I have killed a deer with a knife ounce, we were driving home and some city slicker hit a deer and drove off leaving the deer in the road suffering, and there were about 3 to 4 other city slickers standing around watching the deer die in pain so i got my hunting knife and slit the bucks throat, and the m was still good so we ate it. Don't say that's gross because it was still alive, so it was like hunting but without the hunting.

It depends on how you approach this mentally. You are "killing" the animal with the arrow. The knife is to quicken the death so the animal doesn't suffer. If you asked, "how was the animal killed", it was with a bow and arrow. If you have to finish an animal, you do it as quickly as possible to minimize suffering. Others should stand back because the man with the knife can be hurt by the animal or by the man trying to back up and tripping over the spectator. The feeling is that of finishing a job. If you can't quickly bring yourself to end the animal's suffering, then don't hunt with a bow. A rifle or shotgun will kill quicker and if their is a misplaced shot, the hunter can shoot again to finish the animal.

Sure, Best bet is to go for the throat, but beware, you can get hurt.
I once jumped onto a small doe, like 50 pounds, which got knocked out by a car & was coming to. My intentions were to cut it's throat while I had it in the head lock. Well it started thrashing it's legs like it was running, it beat the crap out of me & made me drop my knife.
This was when I was like 20 in the Army, I learned my lesson & will never jump on a deer, unless of course it's a Big one thats trying to get away after I've shot it w/ my bow, muzzle loader, pistole or rifle.
A large doe got caught in a fence while running from dogs at our camp site, my friend wasn't hunting that morning & saw this while walking up the drive, he took out his pocket knife & cut her throat.

Settle down Ninja Warrior....yes, you could kill a deer with a knife if you were very, very, very good.
The problem is, it's probably not legal where you live and most importantly, it's not a quick and easy way to harvest your game which is to say, it's inhumane.
Hunters strive to kill their prey quickly and efficiently and that means a high powered bow, shotgun or rifle (and in some cases a handgun)
