They can be peeled sliced and eaten raw, or steamed and mashed with some butter, like potatoes, or roasted. The can be carved like pumpkins at halloween or feed to livestock. In England they leave them in the fields for the sheep in early Spring.

Turnips can be diced and cooked with turnip greens. They can also be boiled until soft, and then mashed like mashed potatoes. Add some butter, salt, pepper and a dash of sugar to relieve the bitterness. In my experience, turnips are best accompanied by turnip, mustard, or collard greens.
You can also give them to friends along with a recipe...

You can use them much like you would a potato. For example, cut into chunks and boil til tender, then drain and mash with butter, milk and salt and pepper.
They're also good in soups or stews, added like you would with raw potato.
Here's turnip producer's website - complete with recipes:

And to echo knittenmamas comment above, my 74 yo Mom reminisces about carving turnips at Halloween (I'd rather carve a pumpkin, myself).

Turnip is great in vegetable soup.
You can slice them thinly bread them and fry them.
Slice them lengthwise and place in the center of piece of aluminum foils add tomato slices, garlic cloves, green onion, drizzle with olive oil, add salt and pepper, wrap tightly in a package and place on grill.

Boil turnips and potatoes. (they take longer than the potatoes so boil them separately) mash them together with butter, milk and pepper.

basically treat them like any root veggie.
baking them looks best though :)
you could even boil them and mash them, who doesn't love a good mushied potato?? same would go for turnipifications.
