the push up only utilizes 60% of the total bodyweight if the person is symmetrical. if you can bench press more than 60% of your total body weight the push up would be virtually useless for "you" in terms of increasing functional strength in the upper body.

Depends on how much you can bench now.
Yes, they both work the same muscles, but when you do a push-up, you are only lifting a little over half your body weight. Not only that, but once you get a little into the push-up, the mechanics cause most of your weight to shift to your leg support, so that at the top of the push-up, you are only lifting 1/3 or less of your BW.
Most guys can work up to benching their body weight relatively quickly, so the push-ups are pretty useless for that. For example, I can do about 100 push-ups and bench press more than my bodyweight. So for me, push-ups are a high rep, low weight exercise that builds endurance but has nothing to do with my max bench press weight.

yes and no.
doing push-ups exercises the same muscle groups as bench pressing. so, if you can't bench that much to begin with, then yes, doing more push-ups will build up the muscle group.
but, if you're already benching sayyyyy 300lbs, then the muscle group is already built up. assuming that you weigh between 150-200, then doing push-ups won't build up the muscles much more, it'll just keep the area maintained.

for sure. the first year of my training was all pushups, pull ups and dips, no weights at all. my bench went up over 60 pounds. before u even get on the bench u should be able to do 40 push ups in a row. try to get to a goal of 500 pushups in 45 mins.
