I think you'll find it hard to buy 30-30 cartridges loaded with spitzers. Almost all of them are flat-nosed or round-nosed, except the Hornady LeveRevolution, which is designed specifically to give you a pointed bullet that's safe to use in your tubular-magazine rifle.

There was only one commercially loaded cartridge for the .30-30 WCF that is not safe to use in a tubular magazines. That was the Remington .30-30 Accelerator. It featured a 45 or 50 grain .223 bullet in a sabot that was supposed to top 3000 fps in a 20" barrel. I don't think that load is still available, but be aware if you find an old box at a gunshow or a gunshop.
Any other commercially loaded .30-30 WCF ammo is safe in a tubular magazine.

Yeah, I can't think of any factory loaded 30-30 that wouldn't work. The round nose is the critical part with ammunition that goes in tubular magazines like those on 30-30 lever action rifles.
DJ and Martin are right. Hornady leverelution is pretty awesome stuff. My understanding is that the polymer tip makes the bullet perform like a FMJ spitzer in flight with less resistance, but on impact it will still perform like a soft point.

Most anything you will find is round nosed. There is a new plastic tipped pointed projectile that I hear good things about, but have not tried it yet.
Congrats! That's a fine rifle, I like them a lot. Go find a store with a good selection and get several boxes of different ammo and go have some fun doing a shoot-off and seeing what works good and you can afford. Get some cheap stuff to play around with to.
Be safe and have fun.
I guess, H, that Hornady is lying to everyone then? DJ

That is one of the best 30-30 models on the market, very ideal and lovable in all respects. Always use a blunted or flat tip shell in a tubular magazine; there are now shells on the market with plastic? protecting tips which are even safer, thats what the ads say.

my pap has a marlin 30-30, and he uses the plane flat nosed bullets. i am trying to convince him to try hornadys lever revolution ammo. it has a soft pointed tip specifically for tubular magazines. it raises the effective range greatly, and with it the 30-30 win is more formidable than ever.

Flat point bullets and blunt round nose bullets are best in tubular magazines. Now there are bullets with plastic tips that are safe to use in tubular magazines. Ask your ammo dealer for them.
The Marlin 336 is a nice rifle.

Do a complete strip clean on it. Take it all the way down to the bare parts and clean them. If that doesn't work take it in and have it looked at.
